Transform South Sudan is building a brighter future for the people of South Sudan.
Decades of civil wars in Sudan wrought devastation on its population, resulting in over 2 million refugees fleeing to neighboring countries and leading to the formation of South Sudan as an independent nation in 2011. Within South Sudan, more than 2.2 million people are internally displaced, many of whom are women and children who have survived violent attacks and sexual assault.
As the world's youngest country, South Sudan faces dire circumstances, with the highest maternal mortality and poverty rates globally—1,223 deaths per 100,000 births and 82.3%, respectively—and an infant mortality rate that is among the highest worldwide, with 60 deaths per 1,000 births.
Our Mission
Transform South Sudan exists to provide real hope and a future for the people of South Sudan. We operate the only medical clinic within a 100-mile radius. We also run both primary and secondary schools and provide post-secondary scholarships to promising students. Additionally, we empower the population through micro-finance and savings groups.
We equip the population through pastoral training, trauma healing training, and peace-building skills. All this is done with the ultimate goal of creating sustainability for the population through gospel-centered transformation.
Our History
James Baak, one of the 20,000 “lost boys” displaced from Sudan in 1987, walked over a thousand miles to an Ethiopian refugee camp, where he survived hunger, dehydration, and exhaustion. In the camp, James heard the Gospel and committed his life to following the teaching of Jesus Christ while also receiving a high school education.
Although James was offered a “golden ticket” to live in America, he turned it down to go back to his village and share the gift of the Gospel and an education with them.
Then, in 2006…
James founded Transform South Sudan (formerly Solidarity Ministries Africa for Reconciliation and Development) to address the material, spiritual, and social needs of his people through partnerships with local churches and the international community.

Our Values

Our Statement of Faith:
Rooted in Christ, Transform South Sudan adheres to the statement of faith adopted from the National Association of Evangelicals. We affirm that the Bible is the inspired, infallible, and authoritative Word of God. We believe in one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
We recognize the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, including His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, bodily resurrection, ascension to the right hand of the Father, and His future return in power and glory.
For the salvation of lost and sinful people, we assert that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is essential. We also believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit, who enables Christians to live godly lives.
We believe that forgiveness of sins and an eternal life with God are found only through Jesus Christ whose substitutionary death on the cross enables those who call upon His name to be saved. (John 1:12, John 3:16, John 14:6)
